Hi guys. I have to ask, how do you know you are getting close to the page turn? I have no idea and like Anne, I will try to avoid it . Actually the choosing a picture thing is fun...when you have the time.

Anne, I am so sorry

I got up early to go to the gym but my ankle is sore, must be something I did yesterday. Of course I still could have gone anyway and at least do the weights but I can get myself out the door at 5:30 to lift weights....cardio yes, weights no.

I am so excited about supper tonight and you won't belive what has me so exicited--->    It's a hot dog steamer! I love,, I mean LOVE steamed hot dogs but they are just not the same on the stove and I have been looking for a hot dog steamer for years. Most of them cook like 40 hot dogs. Needless to say I don't need that many for me and Frank. Anyway this one cooks 6 at a time...and when they are ready it barks . I have to give Frank the credit he found it on Amazon for me. So tonight it's hot dogs and tomato soup at our house. The tomato soup is already in the crock pot, it's just Progesso to which I added some summer squash and onions. Does that count as cooking?

Anne, sorry for assuming you were wearing a costume. Now that I look at it again I can see that is clearly the type of clothing a CPA would wear. CPA stands for Career Prostitutes of America right? Actually I don't know if you are a CPA but close enough. And you would never be out of work again!

Bert, you are so good about driving yourself with that exercise, I so wish I could have 1/2 your drive. Me I look for any excuse not to exercise unless it's walking and that doesn't really count, at least for loosing weight. That's why you get to go to all those parties and still look good partner.

Have a great day guys.

Too bad you aren't a CPA like me, Fran.  Then you could get all the exercise you need right at work.

A hot dog steamer???  I must say it looks really cute and I love the bark feature!  Don't fall over, but I don't think I have ever had a steamed hot dog.  Hot dogs on the camp fire, boiled dogs, grilled doggies, microwave... but I can't recall steamed.  Could you just put them in a steamer basket or is there something special about this piece of equipment (other than the obvious cutesiness)?

Very busy day at work today so I will catch you all later!

The next best thing is a basket on the stove....somehow they are different though. that is probably all in my imagination. Boiled , never. Actually my reason for not using the basket is that I have always been afraid they would taste like a boiled hot dog and as much as I loved steamed, I hate boiled. Grilled over a campfire is good though and of course anything in the micorwave is okay with me . Never had a steamed hot dog...hmmm....I wonder if that is a local thing....I just assumed everyone had them everywhere like we do.

Hi gals,

Late getting on today and I won't be on tomorrow.  I'm taking a day off and going bass fishing with a buddy.

All this talk about hotdogs reminds me of a story.

Three guys from Italy arrive in the U.S. for the first time in their lives.  While at the dock, one says "I-wanta be justa like Americans so I'm-gonna have-a my first hot-a-dog!"  The others agree it's a great idea so they go to the first vendor they see and order 3 hot dogs.

They sit down together and eagerly open the dogs.  The guy with the great idea screams as he opens his and says to the others "Oh My-a God!  What-a part-a did you get????"

Have a great evening, ladies.  Enjoy Halloween.  Still going to be the cowboy and I'm bringing my western CPA.

I loves 'ya!

Hi Anne, I know Bert has gone fishing and then off to enjoy his Halloween party, leaving us all alone :crying:.

I have a busy weekend planned, not a lot of fun things, just stuff I need to get done...you know life gets in the way of having fun doesn't it?

I have not been very good with food this past week or so and my wieght is going up. I need to try and get it under control this weekend. The carrot cake goes out tonigh if Frank doesn't finish it, that will help but I can't honestly say that is the whole problem. I just feel like eating junk all of the time lately. Oh well, as long as I know I'm doing it at least that is a small part of the battle.

Have a great weekend, and enjoy Halloween. You probably don't get a lot of kids up where you are? We get about 100. We don't have anywhere near that many in the neighborhood but they ship them in from all over. I don't mind, it's fun to see the little ones all dressed up. Of course the ones they bring in are usually the older ones who are candy savvy and know which neighborhood are the ones with "the good stuff".

Enjoy your weekend.

PS--my hot dogs were delicious. You have got to try a steamed hot dog....and don't cheap on the hot dog....I only eat Kayem or Maple leaf natural casing....gotta have the "pop" when you bite into it .

Good Monday morinign guys. Hope everyone had a good weekend. I can't beleive it's already November.

We didn't do a lot but we did get a couple of good walks in the dogs, mostly in the woods so it was pretty pleasant. I also got myself to the gym on Sunday so on the exercise front I did okay. On the food front on the other hand, not so well.

Mornin' gals,

Well, Murphy's Law hit on Friday!  My buddy had engine problems so we never got to the lake.  We took his boat to get diagnosed, went to breakfast, and went to the shooting range instead.  Not a total loss as I love to shoot more than fishing.

Had a good time at the Halloween party.  Our daughter came too.  Here's a shot of her and some fuzzy kinda cow poke.

Didn't do well on the eats over the weekend but did work out.  I've found a new workout that helps to master pullups and I gotta tell 'ya that I'm hurting in places I haven't hurt in, in the past 10 months of doing the X.  I think this workout is just the ticket for building my upper body strength for pullups, chinups and the like.

Have a great day, ladies.

Bert

Bert, your daughter is beautiful, even as an evil queen and that's not easy to do .

Well now that Halloween is over I started thinking about Thanksgiving. This is one holiday that presents me with so many issues and guilt trips you would not believe. Years ago I decided it was  ridiculous to cook all that food for one meal but at the same time I knew everyone else pretty much expected it, at that time my family was pretty large so we took turns, when it came to my turn I always opted for taking everyone to a restaurant and it worked out fine. But now my family has pretty much shrunk to my household, my brother and his wife and his daughter family. His daughter decided a couple of years ago she didn't like the restaurant thing (my sister in law had adopted it too) so she wanted to start the at home tradition again. I understand she has a young family and it makes sense but I am just not going to participate in this cooking thing. The first year worked okay, I brought some nice pastries but then the next year she asked me to make a pie and an appetizer....I did manage but that was the sure sign for me that this wasn't going to work. Last year the 3 of us went to a restaurant but there is somehow something sad about just the 3 of us. Then I have the added quandary that Frank loves the turkey dinner and all of the "stuff" that goes with it, I don't really like turkey and Ted is a vegetarian. Anyway, I think I have found a solution...the day before I will go to Boston Market, Frank can have the turkey breast (which is the part is wants) and as many sides as he feels like, I can get chicken and Ted can get the vegetarian plate (basically a bunch of sides). Then on Thanksgiving me, Frank and the dogs can take off and go hike the wapack trail (Ted would rather sleep in). The wapack trail is only a 1/2 hour away and has beautiful views. It's 21 miles long and goes through MA and NH. We can hike for a few hours come home and enjoy our "Thanksgiving" dinner., okay maybe a little lame but at least it's something. Boy it sure would be easier if I didn't hate this holiday so darn much . Or if I could just accept that I hate it and not feel guilty about the rest of my family. Ted and Frank always say they don't care and maybe they truly do not but I do feel the guilt. I don't know why....I don't cook the rest of the year and I feel just fine about that. Oh well, sorry to go on so but this  has been weighing on me since the beginning of October and you guys are just the right ones share it with.

Well have a great day and I hope this didn't get you guys stressed out about Thanksgiving too.

Mornin' ladies,

Fran, I think your plan is inspired.  Everyone gets what they want.  Don't feel guilty about not cooking.  Boston Market has great stuff and you can have it at home.

We're looking at 13 people right now, depending if my sister and her hubby decide to come and visit.  We'll have a regular turkey and a smoked turkey and all the trimmings.  I make a killer apple pie!  We can pick up a pumpkin pie from Costco.

Did an hour of stretching last night and I needed it.  Workout tonight is called Core Synergistics.  It's a series of different exercises where focus on engaging the core is the key.  Eating good so far this week but it's only Tuesday.

Got a hike planned with my men's group on Saturday morning.  Looking forward to that.

Who's the new guy???

Hey guys, tomorrow is a crazy day for me, lots of appointments so I thought I'd hop on tonight and say "hi".

Bert, your Thanksgiving plan sounds good, especially those pies, I love pumpkin and Frank would kill for the killer apple pie you mentioned. Hopefully we can get slices of pie at Boston Market. I could get pies at BJ's or Trader Joes but no one eats pumpkin but me and I will eat the whole thing so best not to get it.

Since you like the stretching so much have you tried some yoga? Are you trying a different program now or are these new things just another level of the X program? So what exactly were you shooting with your buddy....shots of Jack?

Hey Anne, how's it going out there. Haven't heard from you for a couple of day, hope it's becuase you're busy having fun. Any snow in the mountains yet?

Mornin' ladies,

Fran, the new exercise is something supplimental I'm doing.  I'm still doing P90X as my main program but I'm going to increase my cardio and do the new pullup regimen instead of the X exercises.  I'm hoping to build more strength with these.

Funny you should mention yoga.  That's part of the P90X program too but it's an hour and a half and it's hard.  I'm deleting that workout and subbing with the additional cardio workout.  The X stretch is only an hour and it has several of the same positions that the yoga program does.  I can see the value of the yoga but at this point, the cardio will help me burn more fat.

My buddy and I just shot at targets this time.  Deer season starts 11/14 and I'm hoping to go opening day but it may be the week after or so.  I have to wait to hear from my other pal who has access to the land we hunt and see what his schedule is.

Anne, hope you're doing well.  We miss you.

Hi, you guys!  Surprise!  No, I haven't been in the mountains; I went to Chicago to pick out the stone.  I found the stuff that we wanted and ordered 4100 sf of it - although I have not seen the order confirmation yet so I hope that is not a bad sign.

My sister & brother-in-law met me at the airport in Chicago and we spent the weekend downtown having fun.  We did ALOT of walking around which hopefully helped to offset the food (candy actually).  We also saw the Jersey Boys which you may have heard of or seen yourself.  It is the musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.  He was a little before my time but I was amazed that I knew almost all the music.  Anyway, it was really good.

Now I am at my sister's house in MI.  I'll be here until Friday, then I fly back to Colorado Springs and then I will drive back to RW on Saturday.  It'll be good to get home after 2 weeks.

Fran, I read about your Thanksgiving woes but I was confused about one thing.  You said you had been going to your niece's house for dinner the past couple of years.  What happened to that?  Is is just because she wanted you to bring something?

It's hard for me not to like a holiday that involves food.  This year, I may have overdone it, though.  I invited a bunch of people and they are all coming.  I think there will be 14 in all and 8 are from out of town so we will be entertaining all weekend.  Don't get me wrong, I am glad that everyone is coming.  I am just wondering how I am going to make everyone comfortable.  The studio is too small for all those people so I may set up a big table in the house and take food down there from upstairs.  But we don't have couches and comfortable chairs.  Oh well, I'll do the best I can I guess.

Well, I gotta run! Time to go get some exercise!

Hi guys, I have a couple minutes so I caught up on the posts.

Anne, glad to see you back and your weekend sounded great. I know you are a bit younger but I remember Frankie Valle music mostly from when I would babysit and that was all the parents had around...since they were probably in there 20's it makes sense. Maybe it was the same for you?

Yes, not going to my niece's is the whole cooking think. Not that I minded when I could bring what I wanted, which meant purchased but when she wanted me to make pumpkin pie (which I admit I do have a great recipe for) I knew it wasn't going to work out. Make pie :shock: are you kidding me. Of course that may only be part of the reason....I have never been a big Thanksgiving fan....probably starts with the fact that I don't like turkey and for the first 10 or 12 I was sick but still got dragged to the big family Thanksgiving. I have no idea why I was sick but I was with out fail....it is part of the family lore now . So anyway, I don't like the day and I sure as heck am not going to bake a pie....do you guys have any idea how much work that is :devil:, I laugh because I know you do. Good thing I have a husband who doesn't care and a son who was raised by a non cooking mother. All that said I clearly have guilt issues that is probably why I can't stop talking about it .

I don't know why your niece would require you to cook something.  Surely she must know that is not your thing.  Or have you managed to keep it a secret all these years?  IF (this is a big if) you wanted to see all of them, maybe you could just tell her what you want to bring.  Sam's has a great pumpkin pie, for example.  But it sounds like perhaps this is just a holiday you would rather avoid so that's fine.  Is this the family with the little nephews that you really like?  Poor little guys will probably miss you (how's that for adding to guilt???)

The holiday I don't care much for one way or the other is New Years.  To me, New Years Eve is overrated and I haven't had too many good times then.  If you try to go out and do something fun, it is just too darned crowded.  And then what is special about New Years Day?  Football?  That's a snoozer.

I like both Thanksgiving and Christmas but I'm with you, Anne, New Years doesn't do much for me.  We usually rent some movies and stay home.

Well, I didn't mention it but I'm going nuts here.  I didn't work out last night and ate badly.

Seems my brother offered to take my mom to vote yesterday but she's so stubborn that she refused and said she'd go herself.  She missed the driveway to the voting location and drove into a drainage ditch.  She's fine and the car is ok too as she was going slowly.  Instead of working out I went to see her last night and I didn't even get to vote.  On top of that, my brother calls me later and someone hit him from behind and it was a hit and run.  He's ok too and there doesn't appear to be any real damage to his car although he's only had it for 3 weeks.

My mother and brother hardly talk to each other at all and they live under the same roof.  My brother calls me at least twice a day to vent about her.  He won't call my sister as they don't get along so my sister will call me to vent about him as she only hears mom's side of the story.  I'm kind of caught in the middle of all this drama.

Well, we're having 13 at the house for Thanksgiving.  All family.  Should be a hoot.  Thank God for good bourbon!  My in laws will be coming too and I haven't even mentioned that to my mom as she'll turn her nose up at the idea and stay at home feeling sorry for herself.

Thanks.  I feel better now.  (NOT)

Oh, dear, I feel for you, Bert.  Let me think about this a bit.  Seems there is too much complaining going on around you and everyone expects you to listen.  Maybe you are too nice.

I'm glad that no one was injured.  Should your mother be driving at all?  Really too bad about your brother's car - that would really make me mad!

Nah, I'm not all that nice.  I just wish they'd talk it over with each other rather than get me involved in it.

I really don't think mom should be driving.  She's very short and her legs and arms are weak.  Bad combination.  She keeps saying she needs a better pillow to lift her up but her feet won't reach the pedals.  Maybe she should have a Mini-Cooper.

I really don't know how to talk her into not driving.  It would be one thing if the DMV rescinded her license but as long as they let her have one and short of legal action, there's not much we can do about it.  It's still a free country.  My gripe though is that, it's one thing if she wants to put her own life in jeopardy but it's something else again to endanger another person.

I just don't know what to do.

Good morning guys.

Bert, I assume your mother wasn't hurt and neither was anyone else and I guess that's this what is most important. I know it's hard for you to listen to your brother but as the primary caregiver I think he just needs to vent, I'm sure he thinks talking to your mother won't help so he just needs to vent and unfortunately it sounds like you are the lucky one. I do have a couple of suggestions for getting your mother to give up her license....some people have luck w/ approaching it by pointing out their skills are not what they were and what if they hurt someone else? What if a child runs in front of them and they don't react quick enough...that type of argument I know has worked for some. That didn't work with my mother but it's worth a try. What I did was called her doctor and asked him to request the registry retest her. In Massachusetts I know they can do that, I assume it's possible in all states? That way it is off of you. Sure my mother was ticked at her MD for a while but she got over it and of course we supported him saying he was doing his job and if he hadn't requested a retest he would be negligent (okay so a little white lie here and there doesn't hurt ). Of course the down side is she passed her test (not really) but that is a whole other story. It is not an easy issue, especially if she doesn't have easy/inexpensive access to public transport. Have you checked that out? We have a senior van and for $1.00 it picked my mother up and brought her where ever she needed to go, locally of course but in our case locally covered our city and several surrounding towns so she could get to appointments or shopping. Anyway, just some thoughts I thought I'd share since I've been there.

Oh, back to the first topic....your brother, at one point it had gotten so bad between my mom and me that my brother had her visit for a week and during that week he really had a heart to heart with her about how hard the situation could be for both of us and we needed to see the others point of view. Anyway what ever he said, and the week off, did help.  I can only say it is easier to raise a child or two any day compared to an elderly parent. I know after my experience there is no way I will ever live with my son when I am old. I'll take care of myself and when I can't.....assisted living here I come .

Anne, you went to Chicago for your tile, wow. It is no surprise your home is coming out so beautifully, you cleary are working very hard to make that happen. I am really glad you found what you wanted and it sounds like you had a great weekend in Chicago.

Have a great day Spicers....and Bert, I sure hope it's a better day.

Well, I hope you copy me on it too, Bert.  I was wondering why your mother and brother live together.  Is he taking care of her in his home or is he living in her home?  Is he married?  All of this may make a difference.  I know you have said that she is not an easy person.  If he has options and doesn't take them, I don't know if I feel very sorry for him.  Maybe some tough love is in order here but I really don't know without knowing more about their situations.

I am leaving this am to go see my parents and won't have internet access for awhile.  I'll be thinking of you guys.

Hey Bert, just you and me today...Anne is off having fun...boy, that girl does know how to live .

I have no big plans for the weekend, maybe a nice walk in the woods on Sunday with Frank and the dogs, it's suppose to be pretty nice, in the 60's. Didn't you mention earlier in the week you had something planned this weekend?

Well whatever you do, enjoy the weekend.

Hey Fran,

Yeah, I'm going on a hike in the morning with my men's group to Crowders Mountain State Park.  We're meeting for breakfast at 8:00 am and will hit the trail around 9:15 or so.  When we get to the top of King's Pinnacle, we'll eat lunch and have a discussion on character building, discussing someone we look up to, who we feel has great character and to discuss what character traits we need to work on for ourselves.  We'll head down the mountain after that and get some ice cream.  Temps in the morning will be in the mid 30's and up to 63 for the high.  Sunshine all day!

I have to contact my sone today too, to see if they want to come over Sunday.  It's supposed to be a beautiful day, high 74 and sunny, and I thought I'd throw something on the grill.  I'm gonna do that anyway, even if they don't come over.

Have a great hike and be safe.

Anne, you have yourself a great weekend too.

See you in the funny papers.

I'm back, Boys and Girls!

Fran, I don't know if I know how to live or not. As far as I can tell, I'm just always behind.  Every time I get back from a trip, I feel overwhelmed by all the things that haven't been done while I'm gone.

Bert, who did you choose for your discussion on character?

Good morning guys.

Anne, how was your weekend visit?

Bert, I with Anne, we want to know who you choose and why. How was the hike in general?

For the first time in a while I stayed right on track for the entire weekend . I kept my calories below 1500 ( I allow myself 200 extra per day on the weekend) and I worked on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday we took the dogs for a 2 hour off leash walk in the woods. I hope this motivation lasts. Actually I have a dress I really want to wear on a weekend in December and if I gain 5 pounds it is not going to fit, if I loose 5 pounds it is going to look sexy! You know which direction I want to go in.

Out of the blue I got an email notification from one of the challenge sites I do, I haven't gotten them in months. Unfortunately I didn't get one when Anne posted so I don't think my good fortune has carried over to here :crying:.

Good morning, my loves,

I hope you had a great weekend!

Mine was terrific!  We had 10 guys meet for breakfast but only 5 of us made the hike.  We discussed the route and we all felt up to the longer, more strenuous hike so we did a little over 6 miles and most was up a mountain.  I'll get pics to you to give you an idea of the terrain.

I'll tell you about my person of character in a separate email.  Things about his family that he may not want all over the net.

I started my 4th round of P90X this morning.  This one's going to be tough for some reason.  Physically it should be ok but I seem to be having trouble getting my mind right for what I have to do.  I don't know why but I'll figure it out.

Have a great day, ladies.

Good morning, Spices,

I know what you mean about getting your mind right, Bert, for whatever the challenge is.  Sometimes it is hard for some reason.  You have great inner determiniation so I know it will come back to you.

I am happily back home - but feeling so far behind in everything.  I didn't eat well when I was away (unless dessert is a major food group) so now I am back to the routine.  It feels much better to be eating better, I must say.  The holidays are right around the corner but normally I can get through them OK.

This week and next are really busy for me at work so I know I will be working more than my standard hours.  I guess this is my payback for very few hours the past two weeks.

Let's think strong!

Anne, I know what you mean about feeling better when we eat right.  When I was eating poorly for so long I didn't know any better until I ate right.  When I go off to any degree I feel lousy.  Amazing, isn't it?

When I was in sales we always considered the food groups to be caffeine, nicotine, sugar, alcohol and fat.  Some added tobacco to that list.

We might be dating ourselves but we are all still singing, that has to count for something .

Okay, you guys probably already know this but l found a really good way to have cabbage. Last night I chopped up some cabbage and just threw it in a pan with l little olive oil and garlic, sprinkled a little salt on it and just cooked it. Rave reviews at my house. Of course cutting it up was a little work but I guess I can handle that much cooking .

Have a great day Spice Cadets.

I didn't know that about cabbage.  I'll have to try that.  I love cabbage!

Well, started the X again last night with chest and back.  The back exercises are comprised of the pullup/chinup workouts and different weight lifting exercises.  I did all the pushup exercises for the chest but did the negative pullup exercises only to build strength for that.  Did I tell you about that workout?  Let me know.  If not and if you're interested, I'll send it to you.  I can tell it's making me stronger and I'm sure that by January I'll be able to do some pullups unassisted.

Got an appointment this morning at another campus to try and see if it would be feasible to offer a Spanish course specifically for landscape supervisors through the college's horticulture department.  We'll see.

Have a great day, my spicy ones.

Still Singin' Spice:tongue:

Hola gals,

Here are a couple of pics from the hike.  It's only an hour from Charlotte, believe it or not.

Nope, I'm working.  Glad to be, really.

Did my plyometric workout last night and AB ripper X this morning.  I'll work on shoulders and arms tonight.

We lost a tree in the storm last night and it fell on my neighbor's fence.  Gotta deal with that and mom is having problems with her leg swelling.  Gotta go but I'll check in later.

Have a great day!

Hi, Guys,

I was up early this morning to start working.  Yeah, I guess I'm glad to be working too but it does interfere with what I really want to do.

Only a couple weeks till Thanksgiving.  I can't believe it.  Fran, you should come here for Thanksgiving.  I wouldn't make you cook.   You might have to do dishes though!

I haven't exercised yet today.  I thought I'd take a break at noon.

Have a good day

Well, I gotta tell you that my neighbor is a great guy.  I called him and told him about the tree and he went out to look and said not to worry about it.  Seems the fence was rotten anyway and they were going to replace it all in the summer.  He didn't want to do it piece meal so he said not to file a claim as it wasn't an issue for him.  Pretty cool guy, eh?

I'm waiting for a call from the tree removal guy though.  My daughter called my wife and evidently we lost another one in the back yard but it didn't hit anything.  Whew!  Dodged that bullet.

Later my spicy ones.

Glad to hear that no major damage from the tree.  At least it didn't fall on a house or a car or a person.  Do not put your mother outside in the next storm.
