I use the stair steppers almost every other day. I love it. It really has helped tone my legs and when I initially lost weight I had a lot of cellulite that disappeared and I really think it was the stairstepper. I have bad knees too and the stairstepper doesn't bother them.
I don't understand why the aren't as popular compared to the other machines, at least at my gym its like that. I think its because it is really hard! I sweat way more on the stair stepper compared to the other machines even set on the same level.
So anyway I say go for it!

Interesting about you knees. I tried one briefly and it did bother mine, but mine are probably much worse.
I can't even jog, but do fine walking on a treadmil with a steep incline.

I too am interested in the (mini) stepper and just ran across your post of '6 February 2007' and was wondering if you went ahead and got the stepper and if so how did it do for you? Do you think the mini-stepper can be used for the '10,000 steps a day' to lose some weight and firm thighs and butt?

I went ahead and bought a stepper. Still new to me, but I think This Might be the answer for me. It 'looks' really easy to watch someone do it, but it is not as easy as it looks!

Well here it is, nearly a month later and I still do NOT have a routine set up with my stepper.... just 'hit & miss'.....

Make up an EASY routine! One so easy that you can't help doing it. And have some slip days.
Say do it five days a week, so if you miss a day you can make it up.
Start with just a few minutes a day, and make the speed or whatever easy!
Increase so slowly that you always enjoy it.
Baby steps! (Excuse the pun.)

Hey I have got a stepper that has a side to side motion. Kinda like ice skating. I haven't used it in a long time and really should start again, cause when I have it really made my legs work.
It doesnt bother my weak knees and ankles (due to my weight more than anything), but I have it set to easy and go for duration due to my fitnes levels rather than a harder setting.

I have a mini stepper and really like it, think its finally worn out( after a few years of non use and about a year of constant use. Any ideas on a good mini without spending lots of money, mine is a "easy step" got it at costco a few years ago. dont see it anywhere any brand out there anyone can suggest?

Stair steppers - love them... but I think I'm going to actually walk up and down my stairs in the house as a work out. Is that just as effective? I guess the difference is it feels like you are always going 'up' with the stepper but at home I get that small 5 second break of going back down the stairs before I work my way up again.

Perhaps, maybe it's because you know you are actually climbing?

I always use it at the gym, 4steps is 5cal I think But I manage to do 100cal on it in 10mins (depends)
On the bike I do 4miles adverage in 5mins(around that)
The tredmill is alright but I never use it,(too boring)
Good things about it:
*It slims you down faster
*Your not as bored as the tredmill(its a harder workout)
*When you get use it it,its fun
*You'll be more fitter
*you sweat 5times as more as the bike
*Burns calories faster
Bad things:
-your legs are very tired afterwards
-Can strain ur legs

Sweat 5 times as much as the bike?!? If my body lost that much water, I might just blow away.

| I do have a stair climber myself in my gym but for some reason 3 months down the road the thing broke on me!. not sure why the bolt had snaped off but i fixed it tho, and it seems to be working fine. my guess its because i was useing it too much and the bolt overheated.all i do now for that is run up and down the staircase in my house for about 15 minuets. Where can I get one of these bike stepper things? I run, but my knees are starting give me some trouble. This bike stepper looks like great outdoor fun, with out the pounding on the pavement. Can you send me the link?
