I find it very easy to go over 2000mg of sodium a day.

Is that too much?

So according to the daily plate...

You can eat about 209mg additional sodium for August 28th, 2008.

Your total sodium consumed for this day: 2,191mg.

Is it bad to max out? Or is the max just the average? How much is too much?

The general recommendation is that you do not consume more than 2400 milligrams of sodium per day. The average diet contains much more than this.

Sodium is very difficult to limit. Because of the 2400 limit, I find myself having to limit or eliminate many things from my diet that would otherwise not be too bad, such as soup and canned vegetables. Even the low sodium variants of these foods are not much of an improvement. You can get no salt added vegetables in the can, but you might have to be creative with spices before you can stomach them. Eating fresh is best when you can.

Even Subway sandwiches, which are healthy overall, are loaded with sodium. A 6-inch turkey sub without cheese and with just veggies has 1000 milligrams of sodium. But, practically any food you get in any form of restaurant is usually laden with sodium.

Processed foods are often likewise loaded with sodium. In addition, many foods which are not processed or are minimally processed are loaded with sodium, also, because it is needed as a preservative.

It bears to note that if you have high blood pressure, you might need to lower your intake from 2400 mg. Some people, though, can consume beyond 2400 mg per day with little to no adverse effects. Some of it, like many things related to our health, is genetic.

My diet on most days has about 2000 mg. I do have slightly high blood pressure (about 145/75), but have not experienced any other negative effects that I know of. It is common, though, to retain water on days you consume too much, so keep that in mind next time you step on the scale.

It really depends allot on the person and their health. My doctor actually recommends to me- to eat more salt. Manly cause of my thyroid. Where as if you have high blood pressure you aren't suppose to eat as much salt.

So, be sure you have had a check up lately.
