| Im 23 yrs old 5,10 265lbs Im working on getting down to somewhere around the 200 mark.. My goal is not to be skinny but to have a nice body(muscles) Im eating alot of fruits and canned fish in water and the white meat from chicken.. My problem is Im a truck driver so it is really hard because I dont move alot.. I drive 10-12 hrs a day.. to work I take 4 fruits with me (mostly apples) and I make myself one toast sandwich with turkey breast on it (wheat bread sometimes rye) and i cut it in half.. I go to work at 10 and at 12 i eat one of the slices and then throughout the day when i feel hungry i eat an apple and then at 6pm i eat the last half of the sandwich which makes it my last food for the day.. after 6pm i try not to eat a single thing but when i really need it i eat another apple.. I exercise 2 times a week in the gym lifting weights and once a week in my basement riding my bicycle for 30 mins.. i dont eat anything sweet and only drink water.. now my biggest question is am I doing enough as a truck driver to loose weight even tho my job requires alot of sitting and doing nothing? any comments appreciated..

| Are you eating anything besides what you listed hear? Because that sounds like way too little to me. I would starve if that was all I ate all day!

| I think so but I feel the same way, I think you need to eat a little more. You can eat more just watch what you are eating. You don't want to starve yourself, you end up hurting yourself more than helping. As for the exercising I think that should be OK if that is all the time that you have. Maybe you can get out of the truck when you stop and stretch really good and maybe do a little exercising...example park further away so you will get to walk more......Kendra

How long have you been doing that? I would have to say, eat more and exercise more. You really need some sort of exercise daily (cardio). I know its hard with your work schedule. But, maybe even a short walk every night before bed or something.
Also, veggies.... You got the fruit, now get the other.
You got a good start. I just keep thinking that you are going to lose interest with so little to eat. Also, I would think that would slow your metabolism down quite a bit. With little exercise and no eating, your setting yourself up for failure. Please eat more!
Good Luck to you!

I agree with the others. Considering the type of food you're eating, you are certainly safe to eat more of it. Try to take a brisk walk whenever you can and have patience.

| Your unadjusted RMR is around 2100....that means you should never eat less than this. This is what your body needs just to function day to day. I don't know where you heard you should never eat more than what you can put in your hand, but that's just crazy! Since you have a sedentary job, do what you can to keep your metabolism going...eat frequently, drink lots of water, and get lots of fruits and veggies. I'm sure it's hard to eat veggies on the go, but try raw veggies like carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, snap peas, cherry tomatoes...and when you stop somewhere to eat, get a salad with your meal. Good luck!

This seems like a tough situation. I wouldn't recommend doing anything while you were actually driving obviously lol. But you could pick up some small hand weights or a resistance band and take them with you. This way if you stop at rest areas along the way for a break you could take a quick 15 minutes to work out a little?

Howdy Hollywood,
Boy, what I would give or do to be 23 again... You are right now at the 'best' spot in your life to get a new lifestyle established that you can live with! At this age, you can still avoid a LOT of the problems and habits and other phyisiological changes that occur with 'time'.... Hmmm....
I have only been in here a month or so, but, I've been alive and struggling with weight for most of my life... I finally feel like I'm starting to understand what I need to do...
But, in looking at where you're at, I tend to agree that you really need to ....
1.) Verify how much exactly you're taking in, Calorie wise, each day... and try to keep it at a level that will allow you to see 'progress' weekly yet not put your metabolism in a starvation mode... like I always do... :) Seems like the 1800-2000 mark or even a little more may be a good starting point.. then as you start to see the weight coming down, adjust the intake up a little to keep the energy levels up... (The calorie tables and charts are in this forum and a google search will find anything you're looking for... for free) my opinion only, after many years of the fad diets... I think the BEST approach is a good solid balanced meal plan... protien, fats, carbs, it all.. but, in appropriate qty's...
2.) Exercise is probably the most important aspect of maintaining good health... I beleive Cardio at least 3 times / week and at a level that will get the heart pumping for at least 30minutes/session. Weight training at least 2 times/week and 3 if you have the time... But, remember, burn is OK, pain is NOT. Push to a good burn but not beyond that point. If you can, try and get up 1 hour earlier each day, and devote that time to an exercise routine.... cardio/weight/floor stuff (crunches, etc..).. Then take your shower and get ready to attack the day.. you'll feel like to can!
3.) I've learned that, taking down a protein shake w/1% milk (23g/ 200-300calories) right before exercise, helps keep me going and actually helps build muscle... you may see weight gain at first but, thats OK.... as long as you're not exceeding the daily calorie numbers... (I get the ESA Chocolate powder at SAMSCLUB... best deal there is, stop....) I also take a MEGA-T Green Tea Extract pill before and after the exercise... Then, immediately following my exercise, I eat a 300calorie high protein Bar (Again from SAMS, 23g !!) and that is really helping with the recovery process... I noticed many improvements in how I felt within 1 week!
Don't let your job trap you into thinking that it is the problem... Make do with what you have... You have a good job and need to adjust your down time to acommodate a lifestyle change. I work in my office 10-12hr/day and have 3 kids and all the other tasks associated with keeping my business/employees running. And, I get up 1 hour early each day to do something for myself... for my health... You can do it to.. But, you'll need to make it your priority...
Like I said earlier, I'd give absolutely anything to be 23 again...
Please keep us posted wirh how you're doing!
Regards
BT

wow...! lol.. i really appreciate the time you took to write all this, and I appreciate the other comments too.. really helps. Looking at my scale, I went down from 272 to 261.5 as of today.. Tuesday Sept. 2nd is going to be exactly 1 month since I started my diet.. I have followed the same routine that I started with and didint change one thing.. I didint really want to be too specific about what and how I eat because I thought noone wants to read a whole book about my diet.. I dont know if you guys would believe me or not but yes I have gone down over 10 lbs in 1 month almost.. you guys have told me to eat a bit more during the time im at work and thats what im doing too.. not too much but a little more like 1-2 low calorie kellogs bars.. over the weekend i do eat alot of veggies and tuna.. that tuna and salmon is at Dominick's (grocery store) is a bit expensive but worth it.. I never dreamed I would spend 100$ just on fish lol.. and I do drink alot more water since alot of you have told me that..
ohh theres one thing I wanna make sure.. when you guys talk about calories, thats the FAT CALORIES correct? When I say I eat one kellogs bar that has 100 Calories and 30 Fat Calories, that means were just talking about fat cals?
If were talking about fat cals, then Im taking in less than 1000 during my workdays.. "Does fruit have fat cals?" If not then Im taking in way too little..
Biketrash, lol u made me laugh about being 23.. lol i guess thats human nature, I dont care about being 23 lol I'd give anything to have a nice body..
P.S thanx for the tip, keep posting I write everything down.. :)Last edited on 30 August 2008 11:59 pm by HollywoodX1

A calorie is a calorie, regardless of where it comes from.
If you consume 200 calories of excess, your body will store them as fat, whether they come from fat, carbs, or protein.
So...if you are going for a diet of 2100 calories per day, that is TOTAL calories, not just calories from fat.
To tell you the truth, the amount of calories from fat is pretty irrelevant. I don't even know why they put that on the label. 1 serving of the peanuts I eat have 170 calories, 140 of which are from fat. Your body needs good fat (the unsaturated variety) to function properly, so limiting calories from fat can do your body more harm than good. Further, there are a lot of healthy foods which are loaded with good fat, and should be a regular part of your daily diet, in moderation.
Finally, most fruit does not have a significant amount of fat. There are exceptions, such as coconut. This site lists the nutrition information for most fruits and vegetables, so you can reference the lists as a guideline.
Good luck!

Well, it sounds like to me you're well on your way to what you want...!!
I'm just tossing out some of the stuff I've figured out from here and over the last 30 years of fighting with it... I think I'm fighting it a lot less now and enjoying it more..
I agree with Crimson though and should have mentioned it, calories are calories... but, one thing I'd add, I've always noticed over the years, TOOOO low a fat diet really wreaks havok on your libido... NOT GOOD FOR SURE... I don't remember all the chemical reasons but, eating a well balanced bit of everything is what out 'container' seems to be looking for... We're a VERY diverse animal for sure... we're strong, agile, smart, all sorts of unique physical and mental skills, some of which I don't think we've even discovered.... so, a very diverse 'diet' seems logical to me and seems to be backed up by about a million pounds of research and proof... my 2cents..
The 10 or so pounds in a month is not unusual at all... I've gained that much in a couple weeks before.... so, losing it in a month is not that crazy at all... especially since you're still a 'little' ways away from your target... the closer you get to your target, you'll probably see a more difficult time trying to get that kind of weight to come off in a month... thats OK.... just keep up the good work and you'll get out of it what you put into it...
I still think excercise is at least 50% of the answer..
Keep us posted
